Cheat River Review Submission Guidelines


Cheat River Review reads original, previously unpublished nonfiction, fiction, flash, and poetry.

All Submissions Should Include:

  • 1-inch margins.
  • Should be a .doc or .docx

Please include a cover letter with a short third-person bio.

Nonfiction :

  • Either submit one short story up to 4,500 words OR a maximum of 3 flash pieces up to 500 words each in one document.
  • The piece's word count at the top right of the first page. 
  • A centered title.
  • Double spaced text.
  • Please conform to Standard Manuscript Formatting.


For Fiction:

  • You can submit a one flash piece up to 1,000 words. Please wait until your flash manuscript has been considered before submitting another. 
  • The piece's word count at the top right of the first page. 
  • A centered title.
  • Double spaced text.
  • Please conform to Standard Manuscript Formatting.


For Poetry Only:

  • You can submit up to 3 poems or five pages of poetry in a single submission. 
  • All poems and titles should be aligned to the left unless there is an intentional choice on the part of the author. 
  • Each new poem should begin on a new page.


Guidelines:

We accept original and previously unpublished poetry. Please submit up to 3 poems or five pages of poetry in a single document. Simultaneous submissions are accepted if acknowledged in the cover letter. Please wait until your poems have been considered before submitting again.

Up to five submissions. We prefer jpeg. and jpg. Please be sure to include the title of each of your pieces clearly in each submission or artwork.

The Flash Fiction readers at Cheat River Review are looking for:

  • language that surprises and entertains
  • continuity in style and structure or subversion of style and structure where appropriate  
  • stories about the ordinary that surprise and challenge us in a meaningful way
  • a strong first line
  • evocative character and place building
  • You can submit up to 3 poems or five pages of poetry in a single submission. 
  • All poems and titles should be aligned to the left unless there is an intentional choice on the part of the author. 
  • Each new poem should begin on a new page.

Please submit either one manuscript of no more than 4,500 words OR a maximum of 3 flash pieces up to 500 words each as part of a single document. 

We welcome simultaneous submissions, but we ask that you please acknowledge simultaneous submissions in your cover letter and notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. 

Please wait until one piece per genre has been considered before submitting another.
